2008 Beijing Olympic Torch Relay Planned Route

Validated by IOC, the Olympic Flame will be lit in Olympia, Greece according to tradition on March 24, 2008. From March 24-29, the Torch Relay will travel across Greece, ending at the Panathinaiko Stadium, the site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. After the handover ceremony in the stadium, the Olympic Flame will arrive in Beijing on March 31, 2008. In Beijing, a ceremony will be held for the arrival of the flame into China and Beijing 2008 Olympic torch relay will commence.

Olympic torch arrives in Canberra, Australia

Canberra, Australia –The Beijing olympic flame arrived in Australia's capital of Canberra on Wednesday following a relatively incident-free run in Indonesia.

An Air China A330 Airbus carrying the flame touched down at a military airfield in Canberra after a six-hour flight from Jakarta and was met by Australian and Chinese officials.

The flame, which has become the focus of international demonstrations against Olympics host China's rule in Tibet and its human rights record, arrived at about 7:50 am (2150 GMT Tuesday), amid tight security.

Thousands of Chinese supporters and pro-Tibet protesters are expected to descend on Canberra for its journey around the capital on Thursday.

Barriers have been erected along the 16-kilometer (10-mile) route and more than half of the city's police force will be patrolling the spectacle after violent incidents in Europe and the United States.

The flame was carried off the plane by Chinese officials and greeted on the airport tarmac by Aboriginal community leaders.

Australian Capital Territory Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said the torch provided an opportunity to reflect on the uniting spirit of sport.

"Participation in this relay is important and it is important for those who care about human rights as well as those who care about the ideals of sport," he said.

"Participation is a way of allowing our differences in a clear and clarion voice even as we celebrate our similarities and our shared humanity.

"In a robust and mature democracy such as ours there is no particular danger in mixed messages."

International Olympic Committee deputy president Kevan Gosper, in Canberra to welcome the flame, said security would be provided by Australian officials.

"People are free to protest as long as it's peaceful," he said.

"We just don't buy violence. I don't think any Australian citizen buys violence."

Ahead of the torch's arrival in Australia, China's ambassador in Canberra Zhang Junsai said he had been angered by the attacks on the torch in Paris and London and he hoped the Canberra leg would be trouble free.

Zhang said the image of a young wheelchair-bound athlete, "holding the torch with both arms close to her chest to protect the flame as violent 'protesters' tried repeatedly to grab it from her, has infuriated me."

The torch, symbol of the Beijing Games, is on the Asian stretch of a world tour that began with protests in Greece when the flame was lit in late March.

At protests in London and Paris demonstrators tried to wrest the torch from bearers while in the US protesters complained about China's rule in Tibet and its human rights record.

The outrage, which followed China's crackdown in Tibet, has prompted officials around the world to shorten the flame's journey and enforce greater security measures.

In Indonesia, the torch was paraded on Tuesday at an invitation-only event around a sprawling national stadium complex in Jakarta.

2008 Olympic Games flame back to Asia in Muscat relay

MUSCAT, April 14 (Xinhua) .The 2008 Olympic Games flame wrapped up its journey in Europe, America, and Africa, going back to Asia with a relay on Monday in the Omani capital of Muscat, the only stop in the Arab world.

The city's relay started from Al Bustan, six kilometers east of Muscat, where the duplicate of an ancient Suhar sailing boat is located.

The antique Suhar boat from which the replica is copied visited Guangzhou, China, about 1,000 years ago. This piece of history indicates a long connection and friendship between the two countries.

"The renewed Suhar visited Guangzhou, a southern city of China, in the 80s of the last century. It's a repeat of an ancient pioneering navigation and it's a symbol marking the long friendship between the two countries," said Fatik Bin Fahar, undersecretary of the Ministry of Heritage & Culture, who was the second torchbearer in the Muscat relay..

Hundreds of pupils chanted "China, China" through Sidab Street as a special way of greeting the Olympic flame.

The relay's 20 kilometer journey took the sacred flame through Sidab Harbor, Al Alam Palace, Muscat Gate Museum, and Al Mina Rings before reaching the final celebration site, Al Qurm Natural Park.

The first torchbearer was Sayyid Shihab bin Tareq al Said, advisor and cousin of Omani Sultan Qaboos bin Said, and former president of the Oman Football Association.

The honor of lighting the cauldron was given to Macki Habib, vice president of the Oman Olympic Committee.

Rahma Marhoon, an athlete for the Beijing Paralympics, was the only disabled torchbearer. "I don't know much about China in the past, but now I get a chance to visit China," said Marhoon.

"It's a good chance to learn about China. I believe the Beijing Olympic Games will be a great success. Each Olympic Games progresses from the last one, so it's the same for the Beijing Games."

When asked about the protests in London and Paris, Marhoon joked that she had to hold her torch firmly. "It's quite safe here, I don't need to worry about that," she said.

BEIJING -- The Beijing Olympic organizers vowed on Tuesday that "no force" could stop the Games torch relay, after a wave of protests disrupted its early legs in London and Paris.

"The torch relay will continue its journey with the continued support of people all over the world," Beijing Olympic organizing committee spokesman Sun Weide told reporters.

“No force can stop the torch relay of the Beijing Games,” Sun said.

Each of these five names seems like a possible child name, but when put together, they sound identical to a phrase meaning, “Beijing welcomes you”.

The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Logo is ‘Chinese Seal, Dancing Beijing’. Along with this symbol, three other symbols have also been selected for Beijing Olympic Emblem 2008. They include the Environmental Symbol of Beijing Olympics-‘Green Olympics’, Beijing Olympic Cultural Festival Symbol and Volunteers Symbol of Beijing Olympics.

A set of other symbols have also been selected for each of the games by the Beijing Olympic Games organization. 2008 Olympic Games torch relay in Paris conludes

PARIS, April 7 -- The 2008 Olympic Games torch relay concluded in Paris Monday afternoon, after repeated disruptions by Tibetan separatists and their supporters which aroused indignation from spectators and sports officials.

The torch was forced to be put on an accompanying bus for four times in the afternoon as precautions against the protestors, a Xinhua photographer reported. The journey was cut short and brought to the final place by bus.

Earlier, a protestor tried to use a fire extinguisher to put out the Olympic torch, but was stopped by police, and another one failed in his attempt to snatch the torch from a torchbearer.

At least five protesters were detained for blocking the Beijing Olympic torch relay in the French capital, the AFP news agency reported.

Henri Serandour, head of the French Olympic Committee on Monday criticized the protests as "highly regrettable."

"I think that people should have let this flame through, that they could have held their protests to one side," he said.

"Everyone has a right to express themselves but to stop it passing shows a lack of respect for the basic freedom of our athletes to carry this flame, which is a message of peace to the whole world," the chief said.

Another member of the French Olympic Committee said here Monday that the Olympic torch relay should not be affected in any way.

"The Olympic sacred fire is a symbol of peace, tolerance... and should not be affected by anybody in any way," Guy Drut told France 3 television.

Spectators of the Beijing Olympic torch relay were greatly annoyed and angered by Tibetan separatists and their supporters attempting to disrupt the Monday event in Paris, the fifth leg of the flame's global tour.

"We've come here only to watch the torch relay," said a Paris student, who gave his first name as Mark.

"What in the world does this have anything to do with us except for annoying us?" he added, pointing to Tibetan separatist demonstrators.

Liu Zijun, a Chinese student studying in Paris told Xinhua that the Beijing Olympic Games is a big event for China, she and her friends were very angry about the protests around the relay of the sacred fire.

"A majority of the French people are friendly towards China, but they have no knowledge about what really happened in Tibet and have been misled by some western media's distorted reports," Liu said, adding those media have played a "very bad role" in the matter.

Tens of thousands spectators went to the street of Paris to watch the torch relay, which covers 28 kilometers starting the Eiffel Tower and ending at the Stade (Stadium) Charlety in the south of the city.

Many on-lookers waved Chinese flags to cheer the event or put flag stickers on the face.

One of them told Xinhua that some of the flags were hand-made by themselves or posted by their friends in China.

Spokesman of the torch relay center of the Beijing Olympic Organization Committee Qu Yingpu said that the torch relay started in Paris smoothly, but has encountered protests during the process. Due to technical and safety reasons, the relay team had to change the ways of torch bearing four times during the process and put the torch onto the bus before the relay was resumed towards the south of Paris.

On Sunday, he said that as the highest symbol of the Olympic spirit, the Olympic flame represents peace, friendship and progress. Under the authorization of the International Olympic Committee, the Beijing Olympic torch relay is taking its journey of harmony throughout the world, sharing the passion and glory of the Olympics with the world, and has received warm welcome from the people en route.

However, a few "pro-Tibet independence" activists have attempted to interrupt the torch relay during its journey in grave violation of the Olympic spirit, as the Olympic flame belongs to the world. The act will surely arouse resentment of the peace-loving people, and is bound to fail, he said.

The Beijing Olympic torch relay takes place on Monday in Paris, the fifth leg of its global tour.

The 2008 Olympic flame was ignited on March 24 in Ancient Olympia of Greece and was handed over to Beijing on March 31 after a six-day relay in Greece.

The 130-day torch relay will cover 137,000 km before the flame returns to Beijing and enters the National Stadium on Aug. 8 for the Olympics' opening ceremony.

A total of 21,880 torch bearers will be participating in the unprecedented relay, which is held under the theme of "Journey of Harmony."
